Redefining Leadership Starts with Visibility

Redefining Leadership Magazine - by Rebecca Taylor

While creating the latest IWD edition of Redefining Leadership Magazine, one idea kept returning to me.

The women featured in this edition come from very different industries and backgrounds. Some run businesses. Others influence change inside organisations, communities and professional fields.

And yet there is a clear thread connecting them.

They lead through contribution. Through service. Through empathy, clarity and conviction.

Not because leadership looks one particular way, but because leadership can look many ways.

For a long time, leadership has been represented through a narrow lens. Certain voices, certain styles and certain personalities have traditionally been the ones we recognise.

When that is all we see, it becomes difficult for others to imagine themselves there too.

Visibility changes that.‍ ‍

When women see other women leading in ways that feel thoughtful, collaborative and human, something shifts. Leadership begins to feel more accessible. More possible.

This is one of the reasons I care so deeply about photographing and sharing the stories of women in leadership.

Representation matters.‍ ‍

Because when more women step into leadership and decision-making roles, the ripple effects reach far beyond individual careers. It shapes the cultures of organisations. It influences policies, priorities and the environments people work in every day.

And ultimately, it helps create communities where women are treated with greater fairness, respect and opportunity.

That kind of change doesn’t happen through one voice alone.

It happens when more women see themselves as part of the conversation and feel confident stepping forward to contribute.

Leadership doesn’t need to look one particular way.

But it does need to be visible.‍ ‍

Here's some powerful questions to ponder on that may help identify current gaps in your own leadership visibility and industry representation.

1 - Where is your leadership already present, but not yet fully seen?

2 - What are you being trusted for, relied on for, known for… within your current circles? And where does that stop?

3 - If someone were to come across your profile, your imagery, your presence online would they understand the level you’re operating at now or the version from a few years ago?

4 - What parts of your leadership feel clear to you, but aren’t yet articulated or expressed externally?

5 - Where might you be holding back not because you lack capability, but because you haven’t fully decided how you want to be seen?

If this has sparked something for you, you’re welcome to take it further.

I offer a limited number of Leadership Profile Conversations for women who sense their visibility hasn’t quite caught up to the level they’re operating at.
